I am doing some tests to learn how to use Node.js and I came across the following situation. // starting with: var http = require('http'); http.createServer(function (request, response) { response.writeHead(200); response.write('Hello!'); response.end(); }).listen(80); // running a simple GET request: var server = http.createServer(function (request, response) { response.writeHead(200); response.write('Hello!'); response.end(); }).listen(80); I was curious if, instead of doing: var server = http.createServer(function (request, response) { response.writeHead(200); response.write('Hello!'); response.end(); }).listen(80); a simple: var server = http.createServer(function (request, response) { response.writeHead(200); response.write('Hello!'); response.end(); }, {options}); would accomplish the same thing (reducing the number of lines of code). I understand I will need to change request to request, response to response and so on but I am just curious. A: No. If you just pass an object to createServer() with a second argument that is an object with properties "options" then those properties will be added to the created server object. The example you provided is perfect example of this. The only difference is that you are using a small less conveninent object literal to give your properties values. Here is an example of what it would look like with your code: var http = require('http'); http.createServer(function (request, response) { response.writeHead(200); response.write('Hello!');
